Job Details
The Role:
As an Estimator, you will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects. This role supports both bidding and awarded work and plays a critical part in ensuring project success from pursuit through execution.
This is an onsite role and requires close collaboration with operations, leadership, and external partners.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare detailed, competitive cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects
Analyze drawings, specifications, and contract documents to confirm complete project scope
Develop quantity takeoffs and price labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and suppliers
Utilize industry-standard estimating software (including HCSS HeavyBid) in accordance with established processes
Maintain and update estimating databases, cost libraries, labor rates, and equipment rates
Analyze historical project data to improve estimate accuracy and future bid performance
Identify project risks, constructability concerns, cost drivers, and long-lead procurement items
Solicit, evaluate, and level subcontractor and supplier pricing
Prepare bid forms, instructions to bidders, and supporting documentation
Coordinate closely with operations to review schedules, logistics, scopes, and execution strategies
Support seamless handoff from estimate to project budget
Track bid history and prospective opportunities
Monitor construction and material cost trends impacting estimates
Evaluate alternate means and methods to identify cost-effective solutions
Collaborate with internal teams to support proposal and technical requirements
Maintain strong working relationships with clients, design teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders
Perform work safely and remain alert to jobsite and office safety requirements
Perform additional duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Advanced ability to prepare accurate budgets and cost estimates
Strong understanding of heavy civil construction methods and industry standards
Knowledge of project cost control, revenue models, and cost-to-complete concepts
Proficiency with estimating software, particularly HCSS HeavyBid
Experience with digital takeoff and document review tools (e.g., Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff)
Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple bids under deadline pressure
Ability to clearly communicate estimate assumptions and findings
High attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment
Willingness to travel up to 25% as needed
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
Valid driver’s license
Ability to pass standard pre-employment screenings
Preferred Qualifications:
10+ years of heavy civil construction estimating experience
Experience estimating public sector projects for local, state, or federal agencies
Familiarity with transportation and utility infrastructure projects
Work Environment:
This role operates in a fast-paced, multi-project office environment, with occasional time spent at active job sites. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, with flexibility required during bid periods or for field coordination. Occasional overtime may be necessary to meet project deadlines.
